So… where did DeJane Unlimited come from, and what does it mean?
Some of my earliest memories are from time spent at my grandmother’s home.
Life was slower there. Care was woven into the smallest routines.
Laundry dried on the clothesline in the yard, and I would stand beside her holding the clothespin bag while she pinned each piece of clothing to the line. The clothespin bag was handmade from soft cotton, the kind of floral fabric she loved.
Inside the house there were always fabrics, patterns, thread, and the gentle hum of a sewing machine. My grandmother made many of her own clothes. She painted, hand-sewed, and quilted, filling her home with creativity and care.
One of the treasures she made that I still keep today is a Sunbonnet Sue quilt, stitched from the dresses of my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. It carries the stories of generations of women in my family.
She also taught me how to candlewick. The pillows on my bed today are ones we made together.
Years later, when I inherited her fabrics, patterns, and notions—along with many of my mother’s sewing things—I realized something important.
These materials weren’t just supplies.
They were stories waiting to continue.
The first pattern I ever bought was for a pair of pajama pants. I spread the pattern pieces across my grandmother’s floor while she sat beside me, patiently teaching me how to read it. Those pajamas were for my daughter.
Later, my mother made me a clock using the leftover fabric from those pajamas and buttons from my grandmother’s sewing collection.
Years later, I used that very same pattern again to make Dr. Seuss pajama pants for my grandson.
In that moment, everything came full circle.
DeJane Unlimited was born from that legacy—a belief that textiles hold memory, and that worn or forgotten things can be given new life with care and creativity.
My grandmother, Alma Dean, greeted every hug the same way. She would squeeze me tight and say,
“Ooooohh you smell so good.”
It was her way of noticing the small things and showing love through the simplest moments. That same spirit of warmth and attention to everyday details is woven into everything I create today.
Through reconstructed garments, embroidered details, keepsakes, and handcrafted pieces, every creation carries that same heart.
Where old threads find new stories.
